Community Knowledge Matters
A Highlands & Islands Network for Community-Led Research
join the network

How can communities and researchers work better together to support mental wellbeing?

Build Connections
Connect with others interested in community-led research around wellbeing across Highlands & Islands and beyond.
Share Ideas
Share resources, insights and challenges in this work and discover ongoing projects and wider opportunities.
Make Change
Be part of a wider campaign to shape policy on the value of lived experience and community-led research in mental wellbeing.

We need diverse and integrated forms of knowledge to make sense of the world. Everyone's expertise matters.
Community Knowledge Matters believes that more equitable partnerships between communities, researchers and decision makers can support better wellbeing, and that all forms of knowledge and experiences around mental health should be used to inform best practice and policy changes.

This network is open to everyone, including:
Communities in the Highlands and Islands who are interested in being more involved in research to support your work around mental wellbeing
Researchers who are keen to support more equitable processes and partnerships that centre communities through an ethics of care
Decision makers interested in widening what counts as evidence and making system changes to balance power dynamics
Individuals from across Scotland and beyond interested in learning from this network and sharing their own experiences

The Road to Change
How can communities and researchers work better together to support mental wellbeing?

Researchers are not separate from communities. Members of the community are ‘researchers’ in their own right, uniquely making sense of the world, and researchers are also part of their communities. We are better working together and sharing resources to effect structural change.

We have a growing list of resources about community-led research, an upcoming programme of events, and more information about how this network came about and who's involved.
Join the community
We've partnered with Community Lab to design a digital collaboration space to support discoverability, cross-sector connectivity, and meaningful interactions.

Community Lab exists to break the tension between the self-organising, sharing, vibrant world we want to be part of and the silos that limit our collective imagination.

Curiosity in Action

Alongside the network, we will be running Curiosity In Action, a two-year programme to explore the impact of STEM in youth work funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

This will involve pairing 10 youth groups across Scotland with scientists involved in STFC research - including astronomy, space science and physics - in a collaborative action research process.  Together they will trial activities, explore approaches to discover what work well and understand the impact this work has on young people.

Applications for youth groups are now open!
